Anthropic has announced the Anthropic Cyber Mission, a new effort to help organizations protect critical infrastructure and widely used open-source software. The October 8 announcement focuses on using advanced AI capabilities for defensive work at a time when the same technology can also accelerate cyberattacks. A central part of the initiative is the Critical Infrastructure Defense Program. It brings Claude models, Anthropic engineers and threat research to established providers responsible for securing operational technology. This includes the industrial control systems and networks behind power grids, water utilities, factories and transportation networks. Anthropic named founding partners including Accenture, Booz Allen, CrowdStrike, Deloitte, Dragos, Hitachi, Nozomi Networks, Palo Alto Networks, PwC and Rockwell Automation. Rather than attempting to replace operators' existing security teams, the program is designed to work through organizations already trusted to maintain these environments. The distinction matters because industrial systems cannot always be patched like conventional business software. Some equipment must operate continuously, and an untested change could interrupt an essential service. AI-assisted vulnerability discovery therefore still requires careful validation, prioritization and deployment by qualified specialists. The second major component is OSS Scanner, an opt-in service offering free periodic AI-assisted vulnerability scans for open-source projects. Reports can include a possible exploit demonstration, explanation and suggested fix. Anthropic says these reports are model-generated without human review, meaning maintainers must independently assess their accuracy and severity. For developers and businesses, the announcement reflects a broader shift in AI cybersecurity: identifying bugs is only part of the challenge. Teams must also determine whether findings are real, understand the operational impact and fix weaknesses without creating new problems. Anthropic describes the Cyber Mission as a long-term initiative rather than a finished solution. Its initial programs offer a practical test of whether frontier AI can help defenders close vulnerabilities faster while keeping humans responsible for consequential security decisions.
